OPERATION: Sea Turtle Rescue, opening Saturday, June 18th at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, encourages visitors to learn first-hand how sea turtles are cared for and nursed back to health. After choosing a toy turtle at the exhibit entrance, young patrons will don a lab coat and become a “sea turtle veterinarian” as they take their patient to a computer station to learn what threat their toy turtle is facing. They will then help pretend-nurse it back to health and “return it to the sea” at the end of the exhibit – allowing the next visitor to enjoy the experience!
“Our goal is to help make people aware of the challenges sea turtles face in our oceans every day and highlight those dedicated organizations and individuals who work hard to rescue and rehabilitate these amazing creatures,” says Maylon White, Aquarium Director.
The exhibit, presented in partnership with the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.), will also feature a live green sea turtle on display in the gallery tank along with a variety of other interesting fish. Fun and educational information about the types of sea turtles that inhabit the Outer Banks will also be a key element to the exhibit.
