Dare County Schools: What’s with the required juice boxes?

Dare County School Food Services:  Child Nutrition  has set goals to GO GREEN and to decrease negative impacts on the environment.  This includes

• Decreased use of disposable trays from 200,000 per year to 50,000 saving $7,500 per year and keeping 150,000 trays out of the landfill.

• Implemented napkins dispensers which cut napkin use by 25%.

• Napkins are made of 100% recycled fibers.

• Promotes recycling of cardboard and cans

• New in 2009-2010! recycling of plastic bottles

BUT, I’ve heard of at least one class at a local elementary school where parents are REQUIRED to send in juice boxes.  What’s the deal?
